Corner Radius에 대한 개인적인 생각

이번 WWDC를 준비하면서 UI에 대한 많은 고민들을 해봤던 것 같다. 그중에서도 Corner Radius에 대한 궁금점이 많았다. 요즘 거의 모든 곳에 Corner radius가 적용되어 있다. 완벽한 사각형은 드물다. 날카로운 모서리보다 둥근 모서리가 심리적으로 안정적이라는 이야기가 있다. 내 생각에는 지금 거의 모든 책상, 쓰레기통, 상자 등등 많은 것들이 네모로 되어있는데 날카로운 모서리는 아프다. 하지만 둥근 모서리는 덜 위험해 보이는데 이것과 연관이 있지 않을까 싶다. 어쨌든 인터넷 창이든 앱 아이콘이든 우리가 손으로 터치를 하는 공간이니 아무리 화면 안에 있어서 우리에게 상처를 주진 않겠지만, 둥근 모서리가 더 터치하기 편안하지 않을까?

 

Rounded corners는 뇌를 덜 힘들게 한다?!

또한 날카로운 모서리는 생각을 방해한다고 한다. 날카로운 모서리의 네모를 볼 때 우리의 뇌는 A로부터 B, B로부터 C라는 두 가지 단계를 거친다고 한다. 하지만 둥근 모서리의 네모는 자연스럽게 연결되기 때문에 한 가지 단계로 생각할 수 있다고 한다. 결국 사각형은 모서리가 4개이기 때문에 단순하게 8번의 계산 vs 1번의 계산인 셈이다!

스티브 잡스의 Rounded corners에 대한 집착?

But something was bothering Steve Jobs. "Well, circles and ovals are good, but how about drawing rectangles with rounded corners? Can we do that now, too?"

"No, there's no way to do that. In fact it would be really hard to do, and I don't think we really need it". I think Bill was a little miffed that Steve wasn't raving over the fast ovals and still wanted more.

Steve suddenly got more intense. "Rectangles with rounded corners are everywhere! Just look around this room!". And sure enough, there were lots of them, like the whiteboard and some of the desks and tables. Then he pointed out the window. "And look outside, there's even more, practically everywhere you look!". He even persuaded Bill to take a quick walk around the block with him, pointing out every rectangle with rounded corners that he could find.

When Steve and Bill passed a no-parking sign with rounded corners, it did the trick. "OK, I give up", Bill pleaded. "I'll see if it's as hard as I thought." He went back home to work on it.

Corner Radius에 대한 간단한 가이드라인

어떤 Corner Radius가 적합할까? 간단한 가이드라인을 소개해 보고 싶다. 우선 Corner Radius가 높이나 너비의 반이면 위의 세번째 그림처럼 동그란 알약모양의 사각형이 탄생한다! 아래에는 Corner Radius의 값이 좀 더 커질수록 진지함, 전문적인 느낌에서 좀 더 친근하고 편해지는 느낌으로 간다고 한다.
